Breeze – Own The Place
For years a man stood across the street from Josh Korody’s Toronto apartment, staring at the same house every single day. Turned out he owned it, and that he was a well-known lawyer with a long, complicated past. “Own The Place” turns that into a song: a narrator watching the watcher, asking the neighbours about him, staying up late reading everything there is, and learning the man once took on people far more powerful than him and had some wins before it all went against him. The chorus turns territorial, a fight over who really belongs on that street.
James Kearns of Oil Giant takes lead vocal for the first time in Breeze, over a band that clearly knows its Happy Mondays and Primal Scream records: dancefloor synths, a Britpop-sized chorus, post-punk edges. It leads the four-track “Lobster” EP, out November 12 on Hand Drawn Dracula.
